What are the Archives

Archives are original records produced by official bodies, societies or individuals that are preserved because of thier continuing historical and evidential value.  Archival records are unique and require special storage and handling to ensure thier survival

Does the Archive hold information about William Wallace and the Battle of Bannockburn?

The Wallace Monument plans and records are held in archives and the Robert the Bruce Charter

What should I bring when coming to the Archives

Pencil and Notepad, we do not use pens in the Archives

Do I need to make an appointment to visit the Archives or if I just turned up would I be made to feel comfortable and assisted in my search, even if I wasn’t entirely sure what it was I was looking for?

The office is open to the public on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (closed Thursdays and Fridays) from 9.30 - 12.30 and 1.30 - 4.30 (the office closes for lunch between 12.30 - 1.30). While no appointment is necessary, it is advisable to contact us in advance, as reader spaces are limited.

Are there charges for archive usage?

How easy is it to get to the Archive, i.e. is there public transport, maps, signs etc?

Is there somewhere nearby I can go for something to eat or drink, a restaurant or café, if I have travelled a distance?

Stirling Archives is a five minute walk from the multistore Morrisons, who have a resturaunt and there is are a variety of shops to enjoy in the estate

What facilities do you have for disabled?

The Archives is accessible to wheelchairs and we do our best to accommodate disabled users. Please telephone in advance if you have any special requirements.

Can I borrow documents from the archives

Because our documents are irreplaceable, we do not let them leave the Archive searchroom. If they are not too fragile or subject to copyright and other restrictions, we may photocopy individual items, or you may be allow to photograph them.

Is it very dusty in the Archives?

No we keep the archive clean and tidy

How many visitors do you get a year to the Archives?

We keep a record of all the visitors to the archives by using a sign in book therefore we can record the amount of visitor we receive annualy last year we had       and this averages at

How many people work in the Archives?

We have limited resources but have people who work on a voluntary basis.

Do you have volunteers who work there if so how does this work.

Do you do open  days, exhibitions, presentations or anything group can go along to?

Would you consider School Tours to introduce young people to the Archives?

Yes, we are keen for young people to be interested in the Archive and organised school groups are always welcome although we have limited space so the numbers would have to be limited
