Adoption

Our adoption service aims to meet the needs of children who are in need of permanent new homes.

Our first aim is to return looked after children to the care of their own parents, or extended family, if at all possible. For a small number of children this is not possible and the decision is made to seek an adoptive home for them. Sometimes this will be with the parents' agreement; occasionally this decision will be made against the parents' wishes.

Our first priority must be to meet the needs of children in our care. Most children who need to be adopted are aged 2-5 years with siblings. We occasionally do place babies, however many of these babies have additional health needs. We regard all children to be placed for adoption as having additional needs of some kind.We would therefore only accept applicants who wish to adopt in the age range 0-5 years with additional needs.

Most of the children needing adoption are older and have suffered difficult life experiences, such as separation from their families, neglect or abuse. Such experiences can have life-long effects for a child.

We need adopters who can offer a 'forever' home to:

  • children with varying degrees of emotional disturbance and difficult behaviour
  • groups of brothers and sisters together
  • babies and children with mental or physical disabilities
  • children with chronic medical problems
  • children who need to retain some contact with birth family members
